animus
The 4-song freshman release of stark ambient jazz. Recorded on 4-track cassette.
Release date: May 1986
In 1986 the first jh0st project, Animus was released. One of the original albums on the then all home-grown, all-cassette label, Carrier Communications, it was an early foray into the creative limits of 4-track recording. The songs are minimalist compositions for piano and alto saxophone that are nonetheless charged with an emotional energy that can only come from a blend of naïveté and newfound technique. Drawing influences from musicians on the ECM label including Keith Jarrett and Jan Garbarek, these primitive compositions chart a beginning point for later work that feature compositional structure and open-ended improvisation.
